A nongovernmental organization catering for women, Daughters of Abraham Foundation , says there are over 2000 registered commercial sex workers operating in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
This disclosure was made by the director of the Foundation, Margaret Bargo, during the graduation of nine students from the foundation whom she said the foundation took it upon itself to take up girls and women who were at risk and those operating as sex workers to provide encouragement and see that they were reestablished in line with God’s principles.
The director who said the institute lacks funds, said the foundation has succeeded in training and rehabilitating 330 graduates since its inception 18 years ago.
“Apart from the nine students who are graduating today, we have 20 girls still on training. We hope to admit at least 20 more between the end of the year and early next year to make a total of 40. This has financial implications.”
Bargo called on the government and philanthropic Nigerians to help train of the girls and women, adding that the institute has purchased tools for the graduating students so that it would help them as they start with life.
Also speaking, the grand patron of the Foundation, Gen. Jeremiah Useni (rtd), expressed joy that the foundation which his late wife, Julie Useni, started, has continued even after her demise to thrive to become a source of help for women and girls in distress.
“I feel happy. When my wife started this, I didn’t know it will grow to this extent. We started from a rented building. We got funds from christians who believe in this cause. We will continue to monitor those who graduated today. We don’t leave them to go like that. I pray that they do not forget what they have leant here. They should stick to God and prosper, ” he said.
The former deputy governor of Plateau State, Pauline Tallen, who heaped accolades on Lt Gen Useni for sustaining the dreams of his late wife , called on the FCT administration to help the institute with grants that will help it overcome some challenges.
The students who were taught skills like hairdressing, tailoring, craft and catering were given certificate of completion and some cash to serve as their transport fare back to their various places.
