The
Vice-Chancellor, Babcock University, Ogun State, Prof. Kayode Makinde,
has called for the inclusion of the specific role of traditional rulers
in the constitution.
Specifically, Makinde advocated a return to the first
republic political arrangement where traditional rulers functioned as
the chairmen of the local government councils.
This, he said, would ensure responsibility and accountability in the running of the affairs of the local government councils.
Makinde said this in his keynote address at the launch of the biography of the Olubara of Ibara, Oba Jacob Omolade, in Abeokuta on Friday.
The biography entitled, ‘An Odyssey of a Trailblazer’ was written by Prof. Dayo Alao.
According to him, the nation could not afford to
continue to exclude the modern traditional rulers and institutions from
the governance of the country.
He said, “It would be a costly mistake if Nigeria jettisoned its
traditional rulers and institutions at such a time when the nation’s
relatively young democracy requires their experience and integrity.”Culled: Punchng
