Nigeria should have no business being hungry – UI VC

Ibadan – The Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has said that the university will collaborate with development partners to achieve food sufficiency and banish hunger from Nigeria.
He said this on Wednesday in Ibadan when the management of Flour Mill Plc. visited him to seek partnership with the university to conduct research on grains.
“We believe that a country of over 160 million people should have no business being hungry.
“This country is so richly blessed with resources. We can turn the food challenges in this country to an opportunity and banish hunger forever.
“ We are happy that we have a Minister of Agriculture that is interested in growing and preserving farm produces,’’ Adewole said.
The vice chancellor said that UI would go beyond food production to the preservation of food through teaching and research.
According to him, an institution can thrive by not only reaching out to the society but by changing the society.
He said: “we need a sustainable partnership that will be very productive’’.
In his remarks, the Secretary of Flour Mill Plc., Alhaji Olalekan Saliu, said they were in the state to explore avenue of partnership with UI to boost food security in Nigeria through research.
“As the foremost flour mill in Nigeria we are trying to articulate our corporate social responsibility services by ensuring food sufficiency for all.
“We want to encourage research into grains to boost availability of food,” Saliu said. (NAN)
