Ijebu-Ode (Ogun State) – Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale and
Paramount ruler of Ijebuland, has urged the Federal Government to
improve the welfare of the Nigerian Police for efficient service
delivery.
Adetona made the call when the new AIG for Zone 2 headquarters, Lagos, Mr Mamman Tsafe, paid him a courtesy visit at his place in Ijebu-Ode, on Thursday.
The Awujale said there was no way the Police could be efficient in tackling insecurity without good welfare packages as well as the provision of modern equipment to fight crime.
“If the police are not provided with good welfare packages, communication gadgets, sophisticated weapons as well as patrol vehicles, then we cannot expect much from them.
“And I believe it is time for government to be more serious in the work of policing the country, because the first priority of any government is to secure the lives and property of the citizens. “If all our budget will go into security, so be it. It is time government does all what is necessary to solve the security challenges in the country.“
Adetona also called for the creation of state police, saying that state Police would assist in reducing the security challenges in the country to the barest minimum. “I want to suggest that the Police force should not be centralised but rather, each state should be allowed to have its own police. `
`This will help in tackling the rising insecurity challenges in the country. “The Federal Government should be in control of the Army, Navy and Air Force for the protection of the country as a whole, but states should be allowed to be involved in the Police formation.”
The Awujale appealed to the Federal government not to relent in its efforts in fighting crime, adding that no nation could progress in tan environment of insecurity. AIG Tsafe said his visit to the palace was to receive royal blessing from the Awujale for efficient service delivery in the Zone.
“ I am at the palace to be blessed because I believe if I get the blessing of the palace, I will definitely succeed in whatever I am going to do in the Zone. “The traditional institution is a strategic institution that can fight crime and so we have to synergize with traditional institution in that respect.”
The AIG promised that the Police in the zone would work toward peace and security of lives and property of the people.
He called on the people to corporate with the Police, adding that security was a collective responsibility of everybody in the country.(NAN)
