Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead to draw at Schalke 04 and leave their Champions League group-stage hopes in the balance with two games remaining, while Manchester City and Ajax also battled to a draw same with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
Making only his fourth start of the season, Theo Walcott tapped the Gunners ahead before Olivier Giroud doubled their advantage with a powerful header.
But Klaas-Jan Huntelaar drilled his side back into contention on the stroke of half-time to shift the momentum.
Jefferson Farfan fired an equaliser as Arsenal held on for a point.
Meanwhile at the Etihad Stadium, City fought back from two goals down to draw with Ajax but their hopes of progressing in the Champions League are now out of their own hands.
Siem de Jong made the most of some poor marking to score twice for Ajax from corners inside the first 17 minutes.
City replied through Yaya Toure’s smart finish and levelled when Sergio Aguero ran through to slot home.
Aguero had a late goal ruled out for offside and City also had a penalty appeal turned down as Ajax held on.
To make the last 16, Roberto Mancini’s side need to win their last two games against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, hope Dortmund beat Ajax, and the Dutch side beat Madrid.
In other games, Milan came from behind to draw 1-1 with Malaga, Anderlecht beat Zenit 1-0, Dynamo Kiev played goalless with Porto, Olympiakos beat Montpellier 3 – 1 and
PSG hammered Dinamo Zagreb 4 – 0.
