Why marital crisis persists, by minister

MINISTER of Women Affairs, Mrs. Zainab Maina, has blamed the. rising cases of divorce and other marital problems on childlessness among young couples.
Speaking yesterday in Abuja at the commissioning of Nordica Fertility Centre, Maina said the cultural belief that lay emphasis on having children soon after marriage was responsible for crashed marriages.
She, therefore, called on the private sector to prioritise fertility specialisation to reverse the trend.
Maina, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr. George Ossy, said medical-assisted pregnancies would help in stabilising families, enhance productivity and reduce social tension that arise as a result of childlessness.
She said: “It is my opinion that medical facilities that assist in the process of getting pregnant will no doubt help reduce stress and tension faced by challenged couples in our society. The traditional African society as ours is such that regards babies as an end in itself. Couples without a child or children or those lacking in specific sex are faced with lots of pressures and many marriages have broken up in the process.”
