No fewer than 3,160 people have so far lost their lives while 14,673 sustained various degrees of injuries in a total of 4,447 road accidents recorded in Nigeria between January and September 2012, Sokoto State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Commission(FRSC), Dr. Aliyu Umar Gummi has declared.
Dr. Gummi while making the confirmation during the launching of the FRSC newly upgraded commercial driver’s licence, at the Sokoto Central Motor Park attributed most of the accidents to human errors.
According to him, over speeding, overloading, route violations, use of mobile phone while driving, underage driving and carelessness of road users are directly responsible for the road accidents.
While calling on the federal, state and local governments and other stakeholders to collaborate with the FRSC to reduce the carnage on the roads, he stressed that, drivers’ licence is the prerequisite to drive a vehicle on the Nigerian roads.
According to him, the upgraded commercial drivers’ licence is centrally controlled to ensure orderliness and is fraud proof because of its security features.
