Tokyo may be arraigned today

Factional leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Oyo State, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola, a.k.a. Tokyo, may be arraigned in court today (Friday).
Tokyo was arrested by the Oyo State Police Command, Eleyele, Ibadan on Wednesday.
Tokyo and the former Secretary of the union, Alhaji Lamidi Mukaila, a.k.a Auxiliary, had for several months been declared wanted by the police in connection with a bloody clash between the two warring factions of the union.
The crisis led to loss of lives at the Iwo Road interchange last year.
Tokyo had headed to court and got an order from the Federal High Court restraining the police from arresting him.
However, the state Police Command said the transport union leaders were on the wanted list of the police.
On assumption of office, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Joseph Mbu, had restated that the union leaders would be fished out as he was not aware of any court injunction.
Tokyo, who purportedly pleaded with the state Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, to implement the order of the National Industrial Court reinstating him as the chairman of the union, was arrested while trying to reclaim his mandate.
Recently, the state government had warned that some elements within the transport union were planning to cause violence in the state.
Efforts to contact the embattled union leader were not successful as his phone rang when our correspondent called.
The CP, while confirming his arrest, said “Tokyo walked into the police Command in the morning and surrendered himself.”
It was gathered by our correspondent that Tokyo would be arraigned in court on Friday (today) over offences bothering on the attack and killings of innocent members of the public, including a 400 Level medical student of the Ahmadu Bello University, in a fracas between the two warring factions of the transport union at Iwo Road, Ibadan on June 4 2011.
