Gretchen
Molannen, 39, a woman afflicted with a disease that left her
permanently sexually aroused, committed suicide on Sunday, according to
police. She committed suicide just days after the Tampa Bay Times
published a story detailing her debilitating condition.
Gretchen Molannen suffered from a condition called persistent genital
arousal disorder for more than a decade and a half, which left her
constantly physically, but not psychologically, aroused, according to
the Tampa Bay Times. Women with the rare and debilitating sexual
condition, such as Gretchen, often have to masturbate for hours on end
simply to get some relief.
According to the Journal of Sex and Marriage Therapy, any number of
events or medications can trigger the disorder, including going off
antidepressants, starting menopause, and even a bad fall.
It is unclear how many women suffer from the disease, but experts estimate it to be in the thousands.
