Following
allegations by the governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole,
that a serving deputy-inspector general of Police (DIG) deliberately
bungled the investigation of the murder of his principal private
secretary, the House of Representatives has resolved to probe the
matter with a view to finding out the truth or otherwise of the
allegation.
Governor Oshiomhole had, during a speech at a Nigeria Police code of
conduct book presentation last week, accused the DIG, who was deployed
to the state to investigate the case, of complicity in the murder of his
secretary and stalling action on evidence provided by the Department of
Security Services, DSS, in the matter. The Police have since denied the
allegations.
But the lawmakers, while taking the decision yesterday at the plenary
session, mandated its committees on Police Affairs and Justice to take an in-depth look at the matter and report back to the House within 14 days.
Leading the debate on the motion, the sponsor, Hon Pally Iriase (ACN,
Edo State) raised the alarm over the gravity of the allegation made by
the governor, pointing out that the governor couldn’t have made the
accusations if he was not sure of his information.
Iriase also noted the inconsistency between the results achieved by
the DSS and the Police, which he said points out that there is a problem
between inter-security agencies in the country. He queried how the
average Nigerian can be provided security if even high profile cases are
not being solved even with evidence on them.
Shedding more light on the motion, the minority whip of the House,
Hon Samson Osagie (ACN, Edo State) explained that the motion was not
aimed at passing judgement on the DSS or Police, but to ascertain why
the two agencies have different suspects in the case and why the Police
have refused to act on the case file transferred to them by the DSS on the matter.
