Olanrewaju Oguntoyibo: Now that the Jonathan camp is N60billion richer for 2015
If a New Nigeria is what we all desire, then to have it we must unite as one. Yorubas must not push aside their Hausa brothers, and the same must apply to the Igbos, Ijaws, Fulanis, Ajases, Eguns, Isekiris and other ethnic groups. Religious sentiments should be thrown into the dustbin like we did during Occupy Nigeria of January 2012, when the Christains formed a shield around the praying Muslims, incase pro-government protesters try to attack.
That particular incident showed that Nigerians are united but our leaders try to divide us for their own selfish interest.
That’s how we all read in the first week of January 2013, that the Federal Government of Nigeria led by President Goodluck Jonathan, will be buying phones worth 60billion Naira for 10million farmers. As usual social media went mad, calling the president names and condemning the policy. I agree. President Jonathan is clueless and in my opinion the policy is misplaced priority.
But I also think we have failed to look beyond that; we have failed to understand that the Jonathan camp is now 60 billion Naira richer to run their 2015 campaign (we are already seeing posters) and automaticaly 10 million voters are assured on one side.
We need to stop this social media rants and be more active. Our target should be how to stop this government from spending (infact getting) the money.
There’s a need for us to come together. I noticed how divided the social media was during the debate about Chinua Achebe’s “There was a country”. The Yorubas were supporting Awolowo while the Igbos were supporting Achebe. The Hausas supported the Yorubas because of common interest, just like the South Southerners supported their brothers in the East. It was a sad debate as we deviated from the course we are supposed to be taking.
While we spend time disagreeing with each other, Reno Omokri, Oronto Douglas, Tweet Wizard, Mr. Fix Nigeria and the rest are busy strategising, stealing the “#20millionyouths” strategy.
The ever active minister of agriculture came up with the phone for farmers policy and you think we on this others side are ready? What plan have we been able to put together?
Fine, I accept we have been saving N1000 each to save Nigerians who need medical attention abroad, but we fail to impact on the lives of those who need N2000 to pay medical bills in General hospitals. The PDP on the other hand, has the money, the man power and the experience on how to penetrate.
Do you think they can’t improve the quality of our educational system? Sure they can, but they won’t because education is the man power. Any educated fellow will define governance and fight for a better government.
We have to come together and join hands together. Dangote won’t sponsor you, neither will Otedola nor Adenuga open their vaults for an opposition campaign. The opposition parties must unite to deal with these set of people who are Nigeria’s first enemy. The opposition members of the National Assembly must confront and fight all anti people policies proposed by the ruling party. They should avoid passing bloated and senseless budgets like they did mid-December 2012 when 160billion Naira was budgeted for 2 weeks fuel subsidy payments.
Should we say the National assembly members thinks 1+1 is 11 to have passed that budget presented by the Presidency? It’s common sense that President Jonathan will contest 2015 election and his re-election will be disastrous to Nigeria and Nigerians.
Nigeria’s opposition leaders must dump their ambition and work for a common force. The old ones among them should drop their ambitions to contest in 2015 and rather endorse a younger Nigerian, who is conversant with the Nigerian political system, economical decay and social vices.
Someone who will be active among international communities, someone that can define the corruptions in Civil service and provide solutions.
A Nigerian that will be generally accepted, a less corrupt Nigerian who will fight corruption more than Nuhu Ribadu, a Nigerian who isn’t a glutton, who won’t spend 3million Naira daily on food.
A Nigerian who won’t turn his third name to “Ajala” and travel every now and then with 70 aides to foreign conferences that won’t have positive impact on Nigerians.
A Nigerian that will rather improve the health sector instead of travelling abroad to treat common cold (like the Minister of Petroleum did of recent) that N40 procold could cure.
We want a Nigerian who will tell young Nigerians “it’s your future I’m fighting for”. A Nigerian who will visit Shoprite and queue to buy stuffs for his/her children like Jacob Zuma does in South Africa.
If opposition leaders can come together and give us that Nigerian, they have done their jobs and we shall do ours, yes, we shall vote and we’ll vote that candidate. We won’t just vote, but this time we are going to protect our votes.
We are tired of the PDP, I’m ready to spend my money on the Nigerian with those qualities. I did it for one such person in 2011 and I’ll do it again. I wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year. A new Nigeria is possible and it begins with you and me.
