The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, yesterday called on Islamic scholars in the country to preach in accordance with Islamic tenets to avoid creating confusion in the minds of the people.
The monarch made the plea at the closing ceremony of the 27th state Quranic Recitation Competition held at the Sultan Maccido Institute of Quran and General Studies, Sokoto.
According to him, the call became necessary in view of the current security situation in the country.
He stressed the need for Islamic scholars to preach in line with the teachings of Prophet Mohammad.
The Sultan noted that Islamic scholars had a large followership who adhere to their teachings, hence the need for them to preach with decorum to avoid creating chaos in the society.
“Islamic preachers should serve as role models in the society and avoid anything that will create confusion in the minds of their followers for peace to reign in the polity,” he advised.
The monarch charged Muslims in the country to live in peace with one another and avoid anything that would bring disunity among them.
He also harped on the need for Muslims to continue to pray for peace to reign in the country.
The Sultan lauded the State government for organising the competition and called on the winners to redouble efforts in the pursuit of Islamic knowledge.
In a remark, the state Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, assured the people that the state government would continue to accord priority to the propagation of Islam.
He announced that the state government will host an international conference of the Muslim World Congress on March 18, adding that participants were expected from 25 countries.
The governor congratulated the overall winner of the competition and challenged him not to rest on his oars in the quest for knowledge.
At the end of the ceremony, the overall winner of the competition, Mallam Murtala Muhammad,  was presented with a Toyota Carina car.
Similarly, other winners in various categories were presented with motor cycles and other prizes.
