The
Human Rights Writers’ Association of Nigeria has called on the Federal
Government to prosecute those behind the violent attacks across the
country.
The group expressed concern that despite promises by President Goodluck Jonathan to publish their names, nothing has been done.
HURIWA said in a statement on Thursday, “We are unhappy about the
failure to name, shame and prosecute key sponsors of the bomb attacks
that have resulted in the violent deaths of several thousands of
Nigerians.
“The anti-terrorism approach of the government lacks consistency,
focus and determination to tackle the bloodshed given the fact that the
government opposed the classification of the (Boko Haram) terrorists by
the United States Government as a foreign terrorist organisation.”
The statement signed by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel
Onwubiko, and National Media Affairs Director, Zainab Yusuf, added that
efforts to tackle the spread of terrorism in the country would continue to fail as far as the government remains reluctant to expose the sponsors.
The group stated its support for the clamour for the creation of
special anti-terrorism courts to speed up the trial of terror suspects.
HURIWA urged the Federal Government to be decisive and focused in the ongoing anti-terrorism war to prevent full-blown anarchy.
“In the spirit of accountability and transparency, President Jonathan
must expose the sponsors and charge them before competent courts,” it
said.
According to HURIWA, if the Nigerian government could oppose the
tagging of terrorists in the North, it should not have any justification
for sending troops to Mali to stop the spread of terrorism in West
Africa.
