PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan will wrap up his six-day visit to the United Kingdom (UK) with a meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron today.
Jonathan, who has been in London since arriving with his wife,
Patience, on Wednesday evening, will discuss the Mali crisis – where
Nigeria has 500 troops – with Cameron.
After the meeting, Jonathan will then fly to Paris for continuation
of the Malian discussion and Nigeria’s role in the operation with French
President Francois Hollande.
A source at the Nigeria High Commission, who confirmed both
engagements, said Jonathan and Cameron would also talk about business
relationship between Nigeria and the UK.
Meanwhile, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has on a solidarity visit to the Emir of Kano,
Alhaji Ado Bayero, in London yesterday, condemned the assassination
attempt on the latter, describing it as a “dreadful business.”
Welby was accompanied by the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr Dalhatu Sarki Tafida.
Bayero, who has been in London after unknown gunmen attacked his
convoy and killed four of his guards while returning from an official
assignment last month, spoke in Hausa, thanking Welby, and saying he
appreciates the love and friendship between the people of both
countries.
Welby said the Prince of Wales (Charles) “has been very concerned about the incident in Kano and sends his greeting.”
Speaking through an interpreter, Bayero added: “I appreciate very
much your love and friendship for the people of Nigeria and your work
towards bringing a better understanding and peace for the people of
Nigeria especially between the two divides of Islam and Christianity and
hope that your new office will use the opportunity to help the people
of Nigeria in their quest for reconciliation and better understanding
and bringing more peace.”
