The
Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, will only recruit cadets with good
qualifications, the Minister of Police Affairs, Mr. Caleb Olubolade,
said on Friday.
Olubolade made the statement while inspecting projects at the academy
in the company of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed
Abubakar.
“The era of admitting candidates into the police without good
qualification is over. We are looking for excellence and performance,”
he said.
According to him, the academy will produce graduates who will help to police Nigeria.
Olubolade said the selection of cadets for the academy had begun and as
such it was important that ongoing projects at the institution were
completed and ready to accommodate the students.
He gave the contractors handling the projects up to the end of the month to complete them.
He said he had instructed the Inspector-General of Police to ask the
contractors to return to site to ensure quick completion and hand over
of the buildings.
Responding to a question on some contractors’ complaint about the
funding of the projects, the minister said “finance is not going to be a
problem to the contractors.’’
In his remarks, Abubakar expressed optimism that the projects would be completed before the deadline.
The Chief Consultant for the project, Mr Mathew Udeh, conducted the minister and his entourage round the projects.
He identified funding as a major factor for the slow pace of work at
the site. The team inspected the Senate building, two wings of faculty
blocks and a students’ hostel. The Federal Government recently upgraded
the academy to a degree awarding institution.
