IT was anguish as victims of recent accident which occurred at
Ugbogui village, along the Benin- Ore Road, were given mass burial at
First Cemetery along the First East Circular in Benin-City yesterday.
51 bodies were buried after a memorial service conducted by Rev. Barnabas Chukwukere of the End Time Soul Ministry, Benin-City.
The accident, which claimed the lives of the victims, involved a
luxury bus, an articulated vehicle and a fuel-laden petrol tanker,
occurred at about 1:30 pm on Friday, April 5.
Apart from those who were in the ill-fated vehicles, some passers-by
were among the dead while properties worth millions of Naira were burnt
in the ensuing inferno.
Speaking at the scene of the mass burial, the Chief Mortician of the
University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Mr. Wilfred Aikhonogie,
disclosed that 51 of the 53 bodies of the victims were interred as they
could not be identified while two victims, who were recognized, were
released to their families.
At the scene of the accident, family members and friends of the victims, clad in black attires, were inconsolable.
A friend of
one of the victims, who identified himself as Billy Anyaji, said he was
shocked to find out that his friend, Chika Nwafor, had died.
”I had accompanied him to Ekene Motors that very day and not to Young Shall
Grow. What happened and how he ended up at Young Shall Grow, I don’t
know but God understands everything that happened in this world,” he
said mournfully.
While praying for the repose of the souls of the victims, Chukwukere
said a time had been apportioned for every man to die, appealing to the
relatives of the deceased to accept what had happened.
