The Anambra Government on Friday warned that it would shut down more markets and corporate organisations if their nonchalant attitude toward payment of their taxes did not change.
The state’s Chairman, Internal Revenue Services, Mr Nwanne Ejikeme, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka.
Ejikeme said, “We are also in the process of charging those who have refused to pay their taxes.
“Very soon you will see that it is not just markets that will be closed, but also business centres, chambers, banks and corporate organisations.
“Even residents, who refuse to pay their taxes will not be spared.”
According to him, the public ought to know that governance is not free of charge.
He said that many people were yet to realise that they had a contribution to make to the development of their states.
He said that out of the N12 billion projected earnings from taxes, only about N2 billion had been generated in the first quarter of 2013.
“Failure to pay their taxes has resulted in the closure of some stalls at Ose-Okwodu Market in Onitsha.
`These defaulters think they can just be operating without contributing to the ongoing development of the state,” Ejikeme said.
He said that government had empowered some market executives to collect revenue on its behalf to bring sanity into the state’s tax collection process.
“Whoever claims to represent the state in revenue collection must have a letter from the government that is clearly written and signed by three persons.
“The letter will indicate which kind of tax the persons will be collecting and for which period,” he added.
