Rivers women demand police commissioner’s sacking

Women-protesting-in-Port-Harcourt-360x225HUNDREDS of protesting women on Tuesday streamed to the Government House in Rivers State, demanding the resignation of the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Mbu.
The women alleged that the police commissioner was partial in the handling of the political crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.
The women, who had earlier marched through many streets in Port Harcourt, carried placards that expressed their position on the state police commissioner.
At the gate of the Government House, the women, who were in black attire, displayed placards with inscriptions like ‘Mbu, leave us alone’; ‘Mbu, you are a politician’; ‘Transfer Mbu now’; Amaechi has brought peace to our homes; and ‘Mbu must resign now’.
Leader of the group, Miss Urey Ejims, recalled how insecurity became the order of the day in the state before the advent of the current administration.
Ejims noted that residents of the state were then living in constant fear for their lives and property due to the upsurge in clashes by cult groups.
On why they were at the Government House, the leader of the protesting women said they were worried by Mbu’s continued stay as the state police commissioner.
Ejims said, “They have come to cause problem again in Rivers State. Why is the police taking sides in what is going on here? They say police are our friends, but under Mbu, police are no longer our friends. Mbu was sent to Rivers for a reason. He must go.”
Reacting, Amaechi expressed delight that the women in the state had sought God’s intervention in the crisis affecting the state,  adding that all problems would be solved when they (women) decided to rise against them.
Responding to the call for the resignation or redeployment of her boss, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Angela Agabe, told The PUNCH that Mbu was not a politician, adding that such calls were unnecessary.
