The Abia State Government has said that the planned probe of the former governor of the state, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, would go ahead and would cover his eight years in office.
The government’s resolve to proceed with the probe was made known in a press statement issued Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Ugochukwu Emezue, saying that one major area of focus in the probe is the management of the state Infrastructural Fund.
He said there were strong indications that the fund was grossly mismanaged and money diverted and misappropriated by the Kalu administration.
Emezue insisted that the probe “which has received the support of Abians, will help in ascertaining the level of corruption during the eight years of the ex-governor”.
On the claims by Kalu that his successor, Governor Theodore Orji, has properties in Abuja and other cities, the governor’s spokesman said the onus was on Kalu to substantiate such claims with relevant documents.
He challenged the former governor to explain to Nigerians how he suddenly acquired his multi-billion naira mansions in Potomac, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, all in the United States as well as the acquisition of Slok Airlines, banks and other businesses that he acquired while in office.
According to him, “Kalu is busy playing to the gallery with his deceitful Igbo presidency agenda in 2015,” adding that he would soon be exposed for what he actually is.
Emezue said that Kalu bequeathed a huge debt portfolio to his successor when he left office and the debt he incurred for Abia has remained a “sour point” which would continue to haunt him for life hence he was always enraged whenever the issue was mentioned.
He accused Kalu of the taking delight in making frivolous allegations against prominent persons he considered as threats to his political ambition, citing such allegations made by Kalu against former Imo State governor, Ikedi Ohakim, PDP chieftain, Chief Anthony Anenih ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo.
“It is on record that Kalu and his mother after making such allegations in the media when they were in charge of the state, went to beg Anenih and Obasanjo, hence he should not be taken seriously, since everything about him is ‘gamji,’” he said.
The Abia governor spokesman further stated that Kalu was motivated by his envy of the excellent relationship between the Governor Orji and his aides, which is based on mutual respect, and not mutual “Okijaism” which was used to dehumanise those in government during the his era.
