Written by Johnson BabajideA former member of the National Assembly, Senator Joseph Waku, has said the country needs an individual with leadership qualities of former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to stabilise its polity.
Senator Waku, who spoke to newsmen at his country home in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, at the weekend, stated that security challenges facing the country in recent times had shown that it needed someone with high handedness to nip the challenges in the bud.
Senator Waku, it will be recalled, was one of the major critics of Chief Obasanjo’s administration.
He, however, said “in- asmuch as I criticised Obasanjo throughout his administration, I have realised that his leadership quality is the type we need if the nation is to attain the discipline in governance and curb the rising scale of corruption in the country.
“Forget what you hear or see in European countries or the United States (US), Nigeria is not yet ripe for that, so we need someone with high handedness to rule this country.”
The senator, who represented Benue North-West senatorial district between 1999 and 2003, lamented the rise in corruption and incessant killings of innocent citizens and appealed to youths to embrace God.
Baring his mind on the ongoing constitution review, he frowned on the calls for the establishment of state police, while he canvassed for the removal of State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) and rejected the single term bid of six years for president and governors and creation of more states.
