Lagos
State Government has warned motorists and commercial bus drivers in the
state against reckless driving in the interest of other road users.
The warning came against the backdrop of an accident on the Third
Mainland Bridge on Saturday when a motorist fell into the lagoon.
The state government also said the major objectives of the state
traffic law were to ensure sanity, safety and security of lives and
property.
It therefore urged motorists to, at all times, leave their parks,
homes and offices earlier to enable them to get to their destinations on
time, instead of resorting to speeding which could endanger their lives
and other road users.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Lateef Ibirogba,
who decried speeding, also commended all those who rescued the driver of
the ill-fated Toyota Sienna with registration number BB974EKY, Mr Shola
Oladimeji, from the lagoon.
Oladimeji was said to have lost control of his car and skidded off
the Third Mainland Bridge and plunged into the lagoon underneath.
Ibirogba said the quick intervention of local divers and all the
emergency workers was a clear indication that Lagosians are caring
people.
The commissioner said, “The fact that a road is good should not be an
excuse to speed while driving. The road signs and symbols are not there
for decoration but for the safety of lives, if only we could observe
them. We must, at all times, ensure that our vehicles are roadworthy
before embarking on a journey.
“We thank God that the swift response by the people around the area
and the emergency stakeholders also saved the life of the driver and his
car.
“Instead of unnecessary rush and speeding on the highways, Lagosians should add to their travel
time. They should try and leave their homes or offices early enough to
enable them to get to their destinations. This is better than
endangering their lives and those of other road users.”
