The Speaker, Kogi State House of Assembly, Mr. Momoh Lawal has denied his involvement in an auto crash as reported in some newspapers (The PUNCH not included) on Friday.
In a telephone interview with Saturday PUNCH on Friday, he said his convoy was not involved in any crash.
He stated that some of his escort police officers were travelling on an official duty to Okenne when they had an accident.
One of his escort policemen, Lamidi Akeem, later died as a result of the injuries he sustained during the crash.
Lawal said, “It is false that I was involved in an
auto crash. I was not involved in the accident. My orderly was the one
that was involved in the accident.”
Our correspondent gathered that Akeem and some other
escort police officers, as well as the driver of a Hilux pick-up van
were involved in the accident.
They were said to have been travelling towards Okenne on December 31 when a heavy truck hit the van they were travelling in.
Akeem, who hailed from Erin-Ile, Ifelodun Local
Government Area of Kwara State, and the other victims were said to have
been rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja for treatment.
However, Akeem died on Thursday morning and was subsequently buried in his home town according to Islamic rites.
Other victims are are said to be recuperating.
Lawal’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Augustine Akubo,
in a statement on Friday, also said his boss was not directly involved
in the auto crash that claimed the life of Akeem.
He stated that some escort policemen and the driver of the vehicle were involved in accident.
