Federal
Government has sent over 1,110 metric tons of relief materials to
Internally Displaced Persons in Mali following the armed conflict in the
country.
The items comprising foods, clothing,
and household utensils in 37 trucks, were delivered by the National
Emergency Management Agency in Bamako, the capital of Mali, last
Saturday.
A statement by the NEMA’s Public Relations Officer, Yushau Shuaibu,
in Abuja on Tuesday, quoted the agency’s Director -General, Muhammad
Sani-Sidi, as saying the intervention was on the directive of President
Goodluck Jonathan.
Jonathan, the statement said, ordered the delivery of the materials as well as the deployment of the Nigeria military to ensure that normalcy returns in Mali.
Nigeria’s Ambassador to Mali, Mr. Iliya Nuhu, who presented the items
to the Malian Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Mamadou Sidibe, in
Bamako, said the gesture was in line with the friendly relations between
the countries.
The gesture, Nuhu added, demonstrated the collective solidarity towards sustaining peace in the West African sub-region.
Sidibe, who thanked people and government of Nigeria for the gesture, described it as very timely.
He said, “Our country and people indeed appreciate Nigeria’s
participation in the ongoing military support mission in northern Mali
and we shall remain grateful for this gesture.”
