Four die in Ebonyi boat accident

Four people have been confirmed dead after an engine boat carrying 40 passengers capsized at Oferekpe, in Ikwo South-East Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. PUNCH Metro, however, learnt that 36 people were rescued in the incident that occurred about 8pm on Sunday.
It was also learnt on Monday that the incident occurred along Oferekpe-Ovonum waterside as the victims were going for a burial at Ovonum-Obubara in Cross River State.
Those who died in the mishap were Mrs. Nwaka Monday, Mrs. Jennifer Eworo and their children.
An eyewitness, Mr. Chigbogu Nwite, said, “The accident occurred when the boat collided with a log of wood and capsized, causing Mrs. Nwaka Monday and Mrs. Jennifer Eworo, including their children to drown.”
Our correspondent gathered that the corpses of the deceased women were deposited at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, while those of their children were buried by the waterside.
But Ebonyi State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Sylvester Igbo, confirmed the incident, saying the boat hit a rock at and capsized.
Igbo said, “The 36 survivors are receiving treatment in various hospitals in the state. The police have commenced investigation to ascertain other details regarding the mishap.”
