THE quarterly series of lectures of Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral (AVMCC), Ikeja, will hold on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at 4.00 p.m. A statement by the Chair, AVMCC Publications & Publicity Committee, Prince Henry O. Odukomaiya, said: “Professor Gabriel Adesiyan Olawoyin (SAN), Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Ife and a retired university lecturer, will speak on: “God in my life” as a guest of the Torchbearers Society, an elite group at the AVMCC.
Prof. Olawoyin, aged 73, a scion of the royal family of IIe-Ife, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Law from the London School of Economics in 1965 and 1966 respectively.
“A man with an interesting academic history, Olawoyin had in September 1959 enrolled at the University of Ibadan for a degree programme in mathematics and geography. Not long afterwards, he left Ibadan to join the Federal Civil Service in Lagos and shortly after, he switched over to Nigerian Breweries Limited as an accounts clerk. But all of that ended in January 1962, when he passed the G.C.E., advanced level examination in January 1962 and immediately afterwards left for the United Kingdom for a law programme at the London School of Economics.
Immediately after acquiring the master’s degree from London University of October 1966, Mr. Olawoyin returned to Nigeria and was appointed an assistant lecturer in law at the University of Ife.  Two years later, he left for the University of Bristol in the UK for a doctorate programme in law.  After receiving the Ph.D degree in law in 1970, he returned to the University of Ife in October 1970 as a lecturer grade II.  Four years later, Dr. Olawoyin was appointed a senior lecturer in law. He then proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, after which he was called to the Nigerian Bar in June 1975, winning three of the prizes awarded by the Nigerian Law School for that year.
Three years later, Dr. Olawoyin was appointed as the first Nigerian professor of business law at the University of Ife.
He served as a part-time lecturer at the Nigerian Law School between 1981 and 1982 and at Lagos State University, Ojo, between 1986 and 1988.
