Former Super Eagles coach Christian Chukwu has warned the team about the way the Harambee Stars of Kenya will play in their World Cup qualifier on Saturday, saying the visitors use stamina as their strategy in football.
Kenyan athletes are reputed for long distance races and Chukwu fears
the Stars might adopt a style to quickly exhaust the Eagles in the
encounter.
“It is left for the Eagles to take their chances and not be wasteful
in front of goals on Saturday. If they think they can wait till the end
of the game before scoring, they’ll end up regretting their tactics,”
Chukwu, who once coached the Kenyans, said.
“The Kenyans have stamina; they can run throughout the game but the
Eagles can neutralise that with compact play and efficient attacking
force.
“We should not think the Kenyans are not capable of upsetting
Nigeria; there are no small teams anymore, and home advantages count for
little these days.”
The 1980 Nations Cup winner supported coach Stephen Keshi on the
invitation of new players, saying it was too early for any player to lay claim to a permanent role in the Eagles.
“We’re not there yet, even though we won the Nations Cup. The coach still has a lot to do in making the team stronger,” he said.
“The inclusion of good players should not be criticised; we all want a
situation where the coach has at least three players to choose from for
a role. A good team is the one with a reserve of equally good players.
If we don’t have that, how can we face future challenges?”
