‘PDP should stop drum of war’

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party worsened on Sunday as 21 of its 23 governors boycotted the party’s National Reconciliation grand finale tour in Abuja.
Kogi State Governor Capt. Idris Wada, and his Akwa Ibom State counterpart, Chief Godswill Akpabio, who attended the event, came even after the ceremony had started.
Only five deputy governors-Rivers, Kwara, Katsina, Niger and Gombe- attended the ceremony.
Also absent were the Senate President, David Mark; his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu; Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal and his deputy, Emeka Ihedioha.
However, Vice-President Namadi Sambo represented President Goodluck Jonathan.
The occasion was to round off the tour of members of the National Working Committee, led by its National Chairman, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, to all the six geo-political zones.
It was also to mark the one-year anniversary of the coming to office of the Tukur-led NWC.
The poor attendance of Sunday’s event compelled the organisers to throw the gates of the International Conference Centre, Abuja manned by men of State Security Services, open to uninvited persons.
Crisis in the party worsened with the formation of the PDP Governors Forum allegedly by the party leadership and the Presidency.
At the meeting where the formation took place in the Presidential Villa, the majority of the governors were not invited.
It was believed that the Forum was formed to rival the Nigeria Governors Forum, which is being headed by Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State.
The Presidency believed that Amaechi and the majority of the governors are not backing Jonathan for second term.
Speaking on Sunday, Jonathan congratulated the party’s leadership on the tour.
He said the tour was put together to position the party to face future challenges.
He noted that the party’s greatest asset was its unity and urged its leadership to remain committed.
The President, who said there were only two parties in the country-the PDP and the others-, added that with a united party, the PDP would be in a position to tackle the opposition.
Tukur said the PDP was the only national party in the country.
He said the tour of the zones had made the NWC to become the first “mobile NWC in the 14 years of the party”.
He said the party remained the only one that fielded candidates in all elections in Nigeria.
Tukur vowed to implement his agenda of reconciliation, rebuilding and reforming the party.
