Rumours have been swirling around that Cristiano Ronaldo could return to Manchester United this summer but now it appears Chelsea are looking to get into the mix.
According to the Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho has already handed Roman Abramovich a shopping list for when he takes over at the club and Ronaldo is the top name on it.
This is all despite the fact that Ronaldo’s relationship with Mourinho seems to have become a bit strained this season at Real Madrid.
Ronaldo appeared to fire an obscenity in the direction of Mourinho after scoring his 200th goal for Real last week but the Special One is still keen to have his fellow Portuguese join him on the plane from Madrid to London.
However, even the Mail’s article notes that “United have first option to sign Ronaldo if Real decide to sell and the Portugal star favours a return to Old Trafford.”
It would appear though that Ronaldo is just one of three big name forward targets for Mourinho
“Mourinho, who has worked with Ronaldo for the past three years, has added him to his list of premium targets,” says the Mail.
“Wayne Rooney, who would prefer to move to Chelsea, and Napoli striker Edinson Cavani are also wanted by Mourinho.”
Interestingly both Mourinho and Ronaldo were both sent-off in Friday night’s Cope del Rey final which Real lost 2-1 to city rivals Atletico in a big upset.
To other rumours and there looks like there could be a couple of goalkeepers on the move this summer.
The Daily Mirror says that Arsenal are expected to sign Queens Park Rangers’ unwanted keeperJulio Cesar.
“QPR are likely to allow the 33-year-old, who they signed on a free, go cheaply so they can get his £70,000-a-week contract off the books and they are convinced the Emirates is his most likely –destination,” reports the paper.
They also list Hamburg’s Rene Adler, Stuttgart’s Sven Ulreich and Asmir Begovic of Stoke as potential alternatives for Arsene Wenger.
Meanwhile the same paper reports that Liverpool star Pepe Reina is top of Barcelona’s wish-list as they try and sign three goalkeepers to replace the departing Victor Valdes.
Reina would cost around £10m with Borussia Monchengladbach’s rising star Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Villarreal keeper Adrian Ortola also coming in to fight for the position long term.
However, one keeper who is staying put is Reading’s Alex McCarthy with Nigel Adkins insisting he is not for sale despite his promotion to the England squad. (Daily Star)
Finally to a managerial note and Roberto Martinez has suggested he is ready to leave Wigan and join Everton.
“It will be maybe the right time for a fresh challenge,” he is quoted as saying in the Daily Star.
“I’ll sit down with the chairman once the season is over and decide what’s best for Wigan.
“I always felt I would never leave until Wigan Athletic is in a good position for a change of management. I feel now that we need to sit down and look at every detail – but the football club is in an incredible moment.”
