A police inspector attached to the Elere Police Division, Lagos, Ibrahim Abdullahi, has shot a yet-to-be-identified man for withholding a vehicle tyre belonging to another man.
Abdullahi reportedly shot the man at Ile-Epo Bus Stop on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Thursday night after the deceased withheld the tyre of a commercial bus driver for some undisclosed reasons.
According to Wasiu Adeosun, a commercial us driver plying the route, the owner of the tyre, whose identity he did not know, enlisted the policeman to help pacify the deceased and get the tyre released.
He said, “I think the matter must have got out of hand. The issue that caused the problem was money. I don’t even know how much the man had to lose his life for.
“When I heard about the incident, I stopped by the place when I was driving out. He had already died at the time.”
Findings by Saturday PUNCH showed that the deceased did not get immediate help because people who could have helped to rush him to the hospital had all run away at the sound of the gunshot.
A police source said Abdullahi had spent 28 years in service.
Our correspondent learnt that the policeman ran away after he shot the deceased but was later apprehended because he was known in the area.
Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ngozi Braide, could not be reached for comment on Friday as a call placed to her mobile phone went unanswered.
But a source at the State Criminal Investigation Department told our correspondent that Abdullahi was being detained there.
