Governor
Jonah Jang of Plateau State has been asked to reverse its decision on
the “no work, no pay” policy by state chapters of the Nigeria Labor
congress NLC.
Comrade Guchin who is also the vice chairman, NLC and the chairman of
the Nigeria Union of Teachers while addressing aa news conference in
Jos said that the five industrial unions working in the 17 local
government councils have met and resolved that the strike would continue
until the government reverses its decision pertaining the strike
action.
The unions maintain that the strike would have been averted if the
Ministry of Local government and Chieftaincy affairs has acted when it
mattered most.
He said the strike was legal and it was the government that had
failed to honor the agreement on increase in salary earlier this year.
The NLC vice chairman said it was as a result of the breach of
collective agreement by government that makes the industrial action
legal.
In his words: “Therefore, the unions demand that the six month Salaries arrears must be paid.”
The five unions have also accused the Commissioner of local
government and chieftaincy affairs and his team as well as some ALGON
officials of inflating figures of salaries of local government workers
and called that a thorough investigation be carried out and the culprits
be brought to book.
The striking workers have therefore called on the state government to
rise up and ensure that, normal services return to the local government
councils, saying that, “the government of Plateau State has a duty and
owes local government workers the right to immediate implementation of
the new minimum wage and payment of its accrual arrears with effect from
October, 2011”
