Rector of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Joshua Okpo, says he is committed to transforming the academy into a world-class maritime university.
Okpo, who spoke with our correspondent in Oron on Saturday, said the academy had been undergoing a structural reform.
He said, “We have been working day and night and on weekends to ensure that we comply with all requirements towards achieving this dream.
“We have training workshops all over the place and we have world-class simulators. We are adding another simulator very soon. When you visit the academy you will discover that it is not what you used to see.”
According to him, the courses and training for seafarers in the school are in strict compliance with international regulations.
He appealed to the government to provide the institution with training ships. He said a lack of training ships could cause the institution’s graduates their jobs as foreigners with requisite experience and exposure are likely to be more suitable for maritme jobs.
Okpo said if adequate fund was released to the academy, it would embark on more mega projects.
