Kaduna NMA protests members’ killings

EMMBERS of the Kaduna State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association on Monday reduced their work hours to protest against the killings of their colleagues by gunmen.
Its Chairman, Dr. Aliyu Bappah, told the News Agency of Nigeria that three doctors had been killed by gunmen in the last seven months in the state.
Bappah said the association had directed its 1,500 members on Monday to cut down their services by 30 minutes, between noon and 12.30 pm every day, for one week.
During the protest, he said, the members would observe a minute silence daily for the deceased, while the other 29 minutes would be used to discuss matters relating to their safety.
He added that the recent killing in Zaria of Prof. Hycinth Mbibu, a urologist at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, was unacceptable to the association.
He recalled that two other doctors, Chris Ugwu of Saidu Dange Hospital, and Andrew Abutu, were killed under similar circumstances in Zaria.
The NMA chairman said seven others survived various attacks by the gunmen within the period, while some had their cars and other items stolen.
Bappah said the association would meet on Tuesday to discuss the issue and agree on measures to take to safeguard the lives of its members.
