The founder, pan-Yoruba group, Oodua People’s Congress, Dr.
Fredrick Fasehun, has described insinuation that the OPC is a band of
miscreants and hooligans as incorrect.
Fasehun said, during the OPC annual award in Lagos on Saturday, that
the OPC was a socio-political group and agent of social change.
He said, “If you call us a social group, yes we are! If you refer to
us as a militant group, you will not be far from the truth. But nobody
can dismiss us as a band of nonentities or destroyers and that is why we
will protest any attempt to lump OPC together with any group that, for
any reason whatsoever, turns its arms against defenceless civilians and
murders them at will.
“That has never been OPC’s modus operandi. OPC stands not to only
defend Yoruba interests but also the interests of strangers living in
Yoruba land and these ideals we shall continue to advance and represent.”
Fasehun, while presenting awards to politician, Adenrele
Adeniran-Ogunsanya; Fuji musician, Saheed Osupa and 10 others, said they
should continue to be good ambassadors of Yoruba tribe.
The OPC founder said while presenting the awards in Lagos that the recipient had done well.
Adeniran-Ogunsanya said while receiving her award that it was
heartbreaking that youth of today no longer spoke their mother tongue
fluently. She therefore encouraged parents to make sure their children
spoke their traditional language so they could have a sense of belonging
in future.
She described the OPC as a non-violent group and urged members of the
public not to criticise the group without understanding its objectives.
