Police battle gunmen near Ekiti NYSC camp

There was pandemonium at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Ise Emure, Ekiti State on Saturday as armed robbers’ invaded Orun community, which is very close to the camp. Our correspondent gathered that corps members undergoing orientation at the camp were panic-stricken as gun boomed during the attack, which happened at night.
A source told our correspondent that the gunmen attacked a food vendor accredited to sell food in the camp, dispossessing her of the proceeds for the day.
The attack on the community came a few hours after the NYSC Director General, Brig-Gen. Nnamdi Okorie-Affia, visited the camp.
But the state NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Tunde Baba-Ahmed, who confirmed that robbers raided a nearby community, said there was no attack on the camp.
He said, “There was no attack on the orientation camp. Although there was a robbery attack at a nearby community, but we were not the target of the  attack. We thank God because everybody is fine.”
Police Commissioner in the state, Mr. Sotonye Wakama, also debunked the rumoured attack on the camp.
The CP, in a statement, by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi, said the robbers struck at Orun Ekiti.
The statement read, “The attention of the command has been drawn to the news making round that Ekiti State NYSC orientation camp was attacked by an extremist group.
“We wish to state categorically that it was false. There was no attack or attempted attack by any group on the camp.”
