The
past National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Mr.
Victor Umeh, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, the Leader of the
APGA caucus in the House of Representatives, Mrs. Uche Ekwunife, and
Senator Chris Anyanwu were among prominent members of APGA that were
absent at a mega-rally held by the party to mark the first anniversary
of the burial of the party’s leader, Chief Emeka Ojukwu, in Awka on
Saturday.
The rally, which was attended by many APGA supporters from the
South-East and South-South geopolitical zones, was addressed by the
acting National Chairman of the party, Mr. Maxi Okwu, and Governor Peter
Obi of Anambra State.
Obi said though the party was not opposed to the merger of political
parties, APGA would not merge with any other political party or
association but would rather continue to support President Goodluck Jonathan.
In death, he said Ojukwu remained the party’s leader, while he (Obi) was the deputy leader of the party.
The high point of the rally was the reception of a prominent member
of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Dozie Nwankwo, who was Ekwunife’s
opponent in the last general election for the Anaocha/Njikoka/
Dunukofia Federal Constituency, and a prominent member of the Peoples
Democratic Party, Mr. Emma Nkwocha, who came in with their supporters.
In a four-point resolution read out by Obi, he said APGA remained committed to the ideals of Ojukwu, which led to the formation and founding of the party.
The resolution, which signed by Okwu and read by Obi said, “We stand
by our earlier resolution to continue to support His Excellency
President Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan.
“We state that our great party remains committed to good governance
in Nigeria at all levels of government. We thank our Governor Peter Obi,
for the very good work he is doing in Anambra State and urge him to
continue with the good work he is doing in the State and in the country
in general.”
