English
Premier League club, Arsenal, have reportedly taken Super Eagles and
Sunshine Stars defender Godfrey Oboabona on trial and are expected to
move for the player in the summer if he impresses Arsene Wenger during
his short stay with the London club.
UK tabloid, The SUN, reported on Sunday that the 22-year-old Africa
Cup of Nations hero could be snapped up for as little as £1m if the deal
eventually sees the light of day.
Oboabona, who started his football career with Sunshine Stars junior
team in Akure, has never hidden his love for the London club, and has
said on several occasions that he would love to play in the EPL.
“Arsenal are my favourite club from childhood. It is the club I want to play for,” he said.
Arsene Wenger is looking at the player as a potential replacement for
Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci, who are both set to leave the
club in the summer. Djourou is currently on loan at Hannover, while
Squillaci’s contract expires at the end of the season.
Oboabona, who featured in Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier against Kenya
in Calabar on Saturday, was not available to Sunshine Stars in their
3-2 win over visiting Gombe United on Sunday.
While Sunshine Stars coach Samuel Abimbola said the team did not miss
him in the encounter, he also denied the Akure club have any deal with
Arsenal on the player.
“There is nothing for now between the two clubs on the transfer of
Oboabona. We have read various rumours concerning a likely move, but
nothing concrete is on ground at the moment,” Abimbola said on Sunday.
“We all want a brighter future for him (Oboabona), so if any such deal is on the table, we’ll gladly treat with the urgency it deserves.”
