EKITI State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Funmilayo Adunni Olayinka, is dead. She was aged 52.
Mrs. Olayinka, who had been on sick leave, died yesterday evening at St Nicholas Hospital, Lagos.
The delectable first female deputy governor in Ekiti State had been
in and out of country for medical treatment since last year for an
undisclosed ailment. She was the first deputy governor to die in office.
The late deputy governor was, in 2009, diagnosed of breast cancer and one of the breasts was removed.
However, before the detection, the cancer had spread beyond the
breast. Abroad, the late Deputy Governor was told by medical experts
that there was no remedy. She was, therefore, asked to go home to wait
for her death. It was a helpless case but people never thought it would
come so soon, a source close to the late Ekiti deputy governor told The Guardian.
The state government, had, about three weeks ago, made public her
deteriorating health condition and urged the public to pray for her.
A statement issued by Commissioner for Information and Civic
Orientation, Mr. Tayo Ekundayo, said Mrs. Olayinka died “after a tough,
but courageous, battle with cancer.”
“Mrs. Olayinka, an accomplished banker and corporate sector player,
worked in the financial industry for 21 years before heeding the call
for service in her home State of Ekiti when she was selected to serve on
the Action Congress of Nigeria’s (ACN) Governorship ticket in 2007.
“She demonstrated exemplary courage and dedicated service to Ekiti
people, both during the struggle to retrieve the stolen mandate and in
her position as Deputy Governor.”
Only two weeks ago, women across the State, converged on Ado-Ekiti, where a prayer session was held for her quick recovery.
Wife of the Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, convened the session, which
was attended by top female officials of the state and appointees, as
well as wives of top government functionaries.
