The
sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Ekiti
State, Mr. Rindom Kumven, Wednesday disclosed that about 55 people died
in 242 reported cases of road accidents which occurred between January
and December 2012 in the state.
Kumven, who spoke with journalists in Ado-Ekiti, said 288 other
victims were injured out of the 743 people, who were involved in road
crashes that occurred in the state within the year under review.
While reviewing the activities of the command in the last one year,
the FRSC boss said there were 242 road crashes involving 195 vehicles
and 47 motorcycles.
According to him, 30 of the accidents were fatal; 86 of the accidents were serious while the rest were minor 25.
He noted that out of the 47 motorcycle accidents, 32 were serious,
while 15 were fatal, which involved 196 casualties which led to the
death of 21 victims and 77 seriously injured.
Kumven said within the year under review 597 traffic offenders were arrested for 613 offences, while 343 were casualties.
He charged men to always be careful whenever they are on the road
because the facts available showed that males were the largest number of
casualties in all the cases of road crashes.
The command, according to him, tried by enlightening the public on road traffic rules and to avoid accident.
