The whereabouts of the University of Uyo lecturer in the
Department of Biochemistry, Dr. Ime Udotong, has remained unknown two
days after she was kidnapped by heavily armed gunmen at Idoro, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
But the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities, Uniuyo
branch, Mr. Nwachukwu Anyim, has urged security agents in the state to
secure the release of kidnapped lecturer.
Addressing journalists in Uyo, Anyim said he was sure the security
agencies in the state would live up to their responsibilities by
ensuring a safe release of Udotong.
Udotong was kidnapped on Friday by some gunmen said to be “heavily armed” at Idoro, Uyo, Akwa Ibom.
The union leader stated that kidnapping in the state had been reduced
to almost zero level and expressed shock over the resurgence of the
trend.
He said, “All that we know is that Udotong, who was kidnapped on Friday, has not been released.
“We are sure the security agencies in Akwa Ibom State will live up to their responsibilities and are working on it.
“We thought kidnapping in Akwa Ibom State was in the past, because
for sometimes we have not had any problem in relation with kidnapping.”
Nwachukwu added that the union would meet on Monday to evaluate the situation and take further action.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Gwadabe, said the police had clues on which they were working on.
