2015: President of Igbo origin is achievable, says Ekweremadu

ENUGU- Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu said in Enugu, Sunday that the desire by the people of South East to produce a president of Igbo origin for Nigeria in 2015, could be realised.
The deputy Senate president, recalled that since the Igbo people became part of the country, some of them had in the past held high-profile positions in the country such as ministers, ambassadors, senate president and even ceremonial president of the nation.
He said there was nothing suggestive of the fact that the Igbo cannot produce a president for the country if they remain consistent, build necessary bridges and connections in their quest to give Nigeria a president of southeast origin.
Addressing participants at the South East Economic Summit held at the Nike Lake Resort, Enugu Senator Ekweremadu said the Igbo race have qualified men and women who could do the nation proud and turn around the country’s fortune if given the opportunity. But he stressed the fact that any Igbo person who aspires to be the president should be bold, courageous and consistent about it, although he also pointed out that the Igbo nation only cannot make one president.
Ekweremadu said, “I will like to look at the main issue which we have been discussing, which is the future of Ndigbo in Nigeria. I think, and I would like to start with a note of optimism, that we have a great future. Since we became part of this federation, Igbo men and women have been ministers of various ministries. They have held positions as ambassadors; they have been senate president; they have been speakers and deputy speakers. I’m not aware of any other position they have not held except the presidency of this country; even that, Zik had been president of Nigeria, though you muight say it was ceremonial.
