Relatives
and friends yesterday paid their last respect to Rilwanu Gazama, the
former police orderly of ex-governor of Gombe State, Sen. Danjuma Goje,
who was buried according to Islamic rites in Gombe.
Gazama was killed on Friday by suspected gunmen in the Gombe metropolis.
At the burial in Gazama’s residence in Hammadu-Kufi, Gombe metropolis, Mallam Shugaba, led the prayers.
A family source who sought anonymity said the police officer was to
killed by unidentified gunmen on his way to home, at 3:30pm in
Hammadu-Kufi.
He was allegedly attacked a few hours after Juma’at prayer.
An eyewitness said the assailants, who were on a motor cycle opened fire on him, and abandoned the motor cycle.
Another account however said Gazama, who heads a police station near
the Gombe Stadium, noticed an “unusual vehicle packed in the area and
moved nearer to check the occupant.”
According to the source, Gazama, who was accompanied by another
officer, went closer to the vehicle to inspect it, unknown to them that
two armed men were in the tinted car.
The occupants of the “strange vehicle” allegedly opened fire on them,
the source said, adding that the second police officer escaped while
Gazama was unlucky as he was hit by a bullet and died on the spot.
