Prelate,
Methodist Church Nigeria, Dr. Sunday Makinde, and Archbishop of
Anglican Communion, Lagos Province, Most Rev. Adebola Ademowo, have
called on the Federal Government to initiate policies and programmes
that will give relief Nigerians of their “traumatic experiences” in
2012.
The clerics, in their New Year messages, urged Nigerians to enter 2013 with hope, saying the year would be a better one for the country.
According Makinde, government must meet the aspirations and yearnings of the people through economic policies that will yield immediate dividends.
He said, “Our quest for social justice, fairness,
equality, respect for human rights, freedom, tolerance and peace seem to
be a mirage. There is palpable anger in the land and something needs to
be done urgently.
“That it is why it has become imperative for the
Federal Government and other tiers of government to rise up to the
occasion and stem the tide of suffering sweeping through nearly every
part of our country.
“The masses are bleeding, which has led to an emergency.”
Ademowo advised leaders to ensure they fulfil their
electoral promises, saying they should embark on politics of action and
service.
He said, “The dream of many Nigerians to enjoy an uninterrupted power supply has become a mirage.
“The alarming state of insecurity in our nation is
worrisome. Today, Nigerians both rich and poor are worried about the
insecurity in our land.”
